Goa intends to make premarital counseling compulsory

Panaji: Referring to the increase in the number of divorce cases, the Goa government has decided to come up with a policy to make premarital counseling mandatory.

State Law Minister Nilesh Cabral said on Monday the State Government’s Goa Institute of Public Administration and Rural Development (GIPARD) would finalize the counseling course and its format.

‘We are devising a new policy to make pre-marital counseling compulsory in the state. We can also drag religious institutions into it, ”he said.

The decision was taken after an increase in divorce cases reported in Goa, he said.

‘Many divorces take place within six months to one year of marriage. As a policy, we thought that premarital counseling should be mandatory to create awareness among couples, ”Cabral said.

Although the minister said he did not report on the exact number of divorce cases each month, he claimed that it had increased recently.
