The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been asked to take a final decision on hosting the T20 World Cup by June 28.
In its Board meeting on Tuesday - which was attended by the BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly - the International Cricket Council has told the Indian board that it needs clarity on whether India will be able to host the tournament amid the second wave of the pandemic.
While the United Arab Emirates remains a possible backup, in case the situation does not improve in India, the ICC is expected to take a final decision on the matter in its Annual Conference on July 18. On Saturday, in the Special General Meeting, the BCCI had informed its member units that it will request the world body to give it a month’s time to decide on the venue for the World T20.
And sources, aware of the development, have confirmed that the ICC Board has agreed to wait till the end of the month to have more clarity on the health situation in India. In case the tournament is shifted to the UAE, the BCCI may still retain the hosting rights.
In Tuesday’s meeting, the BCCI has informed the ICC that a tax waiver of approximately Rs 900 crore for the World T20 is being discussed with the government.
WTC back in 2023-31 cycle
Sportstar understands that the World Test Championship will continue in the next eight-year cycle between 2023-2031 despite apprehensions. The inaugural World Test Championship final will be held between India and New Zealand in Southampton between June 18-22.
However, with the T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup lined up in the next couple of years, the World Test Championship is likely to be pushed back in the existing cycle.
