Hyderabad: The title of an upcoming Hindi action film directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and produced by Yash Raj Films has started a controversy. The movie titled ‘Prithviraj’ is based on an epic ‘Prithviraj Raso’ by Chand Bardai about the war king Prithviraj Chouhan. Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chillar are starring in the film.
The new controversy began after the infamous Karni Sena demanded a title change for the film. They claim that the movie title ‘Prithviraj’ was only shortened to the king’s first name and that it was disrespectful to him. The organization demanded that the title of the film be changed to ‘Feather Yoddha Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan’. They also warned that compliance with the demands would have the same consequences as Sanjay Leela Bhansali faced for ‘Padmaavat’.
This is not the first time the Rajasthan-based organization has raised its voice against films. In 2008, they protested against the film Jodhaa Akbar, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Karni Sena’s objection was about the depiction of a marriage between a Muslim king and Hindu princess in the film. They demanded an apology from the director, but Gowariker denied it.
Similarly, the organization began in 2017 with a protest action against the film Padamaavat, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. They claim that the film distorts the history of Rajput and harms the sentiments of the community. The violent protests against the film attracted national attention and led to the title of the film being changed to Padmaavat from the previously proposed ‘Padmavati’.
