The death of a 28-year-old Port Huron woman is now being investigated as a homicide and a 27-year-old Port Huron man has been charged with murder, Port Huron Police Asst. Chief Marcy Kuehn said.

The woman was found dead inside a home after officials were called to a structure fire Saturday morning.

At approximately 10:40 p.m. Saturday, Port Huron police executed a search warrant in the 2400 block of Hopps Road in Port Huron Township.

The home belongs to a 27-year-old Port Huron man who was in a dating relationship with the deceased, Kuehn said.

The man was taken to the police department and interviewed, then lodged in the St. Clair County jail on the charge of murder.

The names of the victim and the accused have not been released.

Port Huron police officers initially responded to the 1800 block of Division Street at 8:16 a.m., along with the Port Huron Fire Department on a fire investigation, Kuehn said. The call indicated smoke in the house and a body.

Port Huron detectives and the Major Crimes Unit were called to the scene to investigate the death. The Michigan State Police Crime Lab assisted with evidence collection.
