GREATER NOIDA: Days after he accused a local BJP politician of allegedly assaulting him, the saffron outfit’s district general secretary attempted suicide at his home by consuming sleeping pills on Friday evening. Monu Garg (30) had lodged an FIR against the party’s former Jewar mandal president Sanjeev Sharma. On Tuesday, Monu was allegedly beaten up by Sanjeev in the office of a realtor, where three other party leaders were already present, including Manoj Jain, Sanjay Jain and Ravindra Sharma. Monu had complained to the Jewar police about the matter and an FIR was lodged against Sanjeev.

Monu’s elder brother Sumit told TOI that he was being pressurised by fellow BJP politicians and even the police to settle the matter. “Three BJP leaders who were present at the spot went back on their words and pressurised Monu to settle the matter. Sanjeev has a criminal background and still wanted Monu to apologise to him for lodging an FIR,” he said. Monu allegedly consumed sleeping pills at his home around 5.30 pm on Friday. Monu is recuperating at a private hospital. When contacted, Jewar SHO confirmed that Sanjeev indeed had criminal cases lodged against him. “The matter is under investigation,” he said.

BJP’s GB Nagar president Vijay Bhati said the matter will soon be resolved and a compromise will be brokered between both the party workers. “BJP does not support criminals,” he said, when asked about Sanjeev’s criminal past.
