SHIMLA: The visit of Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur to the border areas of Kinnaur district on Friday resulted into political battle with opposition Congress questioning sudden move of chief minister to visit the areas along India-China border.
State Congress president Kuldeep Singh Rathore said that China is building concrete houses and roads along the state border and the state government has ignored the situation. Jai Ram Thakur, however, refuted the Congress allegations by saying that such statements on strategically important issues are unfortunate.
Jai Ram Thakur, while interacting with media persons in Shimla on Sunday, said that all this issue does not need to be discussed politically and Congress should understand this. He said that there are lot of issues of strategic importance and doing politics on border issue is not correct. He said that Rathore should tell which is the exact location where encroachment was made is. He said that unnecessarily spreading misconception is not right.
He said that irresponsibly raising sensitive matter is unfortunate. “I have visited the area and have observed many things and subsequently inputs would be placed before the Centre,” he said, adding that last year Chinese chopper entered twice inside the boundary of Himachal Pradesh and some construction is going on in Chinese area.
“We do need to speak much on this issue and whatever information needs to be provided would be sent to Centre. Security forces are guarding the borders strongly and such statements that can lower the morale of security forces,” he said.
Kuldeep Singh Rathore sought the details of situation along the borders after the visit of Chief Minister to border areas. He said that Chief Minister’s visit to the tribal district in a sudden manner raises many questions, so the state should be informed about the actual situation of the border.
He said that Congress had already written a letter last year on August 5 on this unauthorized construction of China in Kunnu and Charang areas of the border in Kinnaur district, whereby then the intelligence system had failed and the local people made a video of construction activities. He said that in a letter to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Defence Minister, State Governor, and the Chief Minister, the Congress had expressed its concern about China’s activities on the border and the safety of the people.
He said that Chief Minister’s sudden visit to the region on Friday and the talks with officials of ITBP have added to the concern for the state. He said that now in the region, China has mostly completed its construction work. He has said that government needs more vigilance as it has a very big responsibility of protecting people.
Jai Ram Thakur during his visit to border areas of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti had interacted with the officers of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Dogra Scouts and 15th Bihar Regiment at Army Helipad Samdo in Lahaul-Spiti district on Friday and appreciated the role of army personnel in protecting the frontiers of the nation.
Jai Ram Thakur said that it was due to their commitment and efficient duty despite difficult topography and harsh climatic conditions that we were safe and able to live without any fear. He said that the services being provided by the Army personnel were source of inspiration to all.
