Iran’s Central Bank Chief Steps Aside For Presidential Bid

The governor of the Central Bank of Iran said his deputy will takeover management of the bank while he focuses on his presidential election bid, the state-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting reported.

Abdolnaser Hemmati said he appointed Akbar Komijani to assume leadership of the bank, he’s quoted as saying by IRIB on Sunday, adding that the central bank’s rules permit him to delegate his responsibilities to his deputy during an election campaign.

Earlier the semi-official Fars news agency said Hemmati had been dismissed from his post by President Hassan Rouhani, without citing a source or saying where it got the information.

Hemmati is one of seven candidates shortlisted by Iran’s top constitutional body, the Guardian Council, to run in the June 18 election.
