New cases remained below the 2 lakh mark in India for the third day in a row, with active cases remaining just above 21 lakh.

1,65,553 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry's update as of 8 a.m. on May 30. The pace of recovery remains significantly higher than new cases at 2.54 lakh.

The daily death rate is also showing signs of ebbing. 3,460 patients succumbed to the illness in 24 hours, taking India’s total death toll above 3.25 lakh.

To be sure, data on Covid-19 cases and related deaths may be severely deficient as several states have inadequate testing, chronic underreporting and have been attributing the casualties to other causes.

States Extend Lockdown

Most state governments have decided to extend the lockdown by 7 - 15 days. Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala are some of the states to do so.

The Maharashtra government will announce new rules of June 1, after the Chief Minister has held a meeting with district administrators. The state is expected to provide some leniency in the guidelines for certain districts including Mumbai, Pune and Thane.
