Indore: Indian Institute of Technology Indore officiating director Prof Neelesh Kumar Jain on Saturday said that the reliability of Indian products and services should be very high.

He said that during a webinar on the Reliability and Safety of Complex Engineering Systems which was organised by Society for Reliability and Safety (SRESA) members in Indore in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

Jain was chief guest of the webinar whereas Prof Oliver Sträter, University of Kassel, Germany was special guest.

In his address, Jain talked about the need for reliability in today's scenario where every product related to different fields, such as electronics, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, medicine, vaccines all require high reliability. He said how we can be inspired by nature towards making reliable products like human organs that work without fail throughout the life of the person. He appreciated the efforts being made by SRESA towards spreading credibility awareness in India.

SRESA president Prof Prabhakar V Varde cited many examples of unfortunate accidents and emphasised the need to create a conscious society to avoid these accidents. He said that if the society associated with the risk and reliability programme emerges in Indore in a big way, then Indore can lead other cities towards creating awareness about the reliability of products and services and risk reduction in industries and social domains.

Sträter talked about human reliability and the safety impact and analysis of the human-automation relationship, giving examples of serious crashes in aviation and automated driving vehicles.

Three renowned academics, Prof Pavan Kumar Kankar & Prof Guru Prakash from IIT Indore and Prof Raghu Prakash from IIT Madras delivered the keynote address during the webinar.

Surendra Yadav, scientist of RRCAT, who was the youngest speaker, delivered a talk on his PhD research.

All the speakers stressed the need for the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the performance of safety-critical systems.

‘Launching of SRESA-Indore Chapter’ was also done during the webinar. The function was concluded with a vote of thank by Dr RP Yadav, a senior scientist of RRCAT.
