The India Meteorological Department has said that conditions are likely to become favourable for the onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala around May 31 and to reach Goa by June 5.

The normal onset date of seasonal rains over Kerala is June 1 and over Goa is June 5.

IMD scientists said the very severe cyclone Yaas, which ravaged Odisha and West Bengal coasts, helped strengthen monsoon winds.

“Cyclone Yaas helped the progression of monsoon current over Bay of Bengal and also helped pull the monsoon current ahead in the Arabian Sea. We are expecting monsoon to arrive in Kerala on May 31 and from that day we will be regularly monitoring the weather conditions in Goa and announce the onset date,” IMD scientists said.

The weather office on Saturday said that Southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala around June 1. It advances northwards, usually in surges, and covers the entire country by around
July 15.

It said in the past ten years monsoon has taken less than four and even more than four days on multiple occasions to reach Goa after its onset
over Kerala.

Presently a circulation lies off coast of Karnataka at 3.1 km above mean sea level as a result fairly widespread rainfall accompanied with lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places on May 30-31.
