MUMBAI:
Andheri Police solved a case of murder of a woman within 24 hours on Friday and arrested a teenager who was in a live-in relationship with her.
The woman identified as Jyoti Gawde (24) succumbed to a severe head injury after the accused locked themselves inside a public toilet located below the Metro Rail Station in
Andheri (East) on May 27.
Accused Niyaz Ali
Ansari (19) was nabbed from his Jogeshwari hideout when he was trying to board a train to escape to West Bengal. Ansari committed the offence over a petty issue after he chased Gawde into a public men’s toilet and after closing the door banged her head on the water tap.
Both, Gawde and Ansari, resided on the roadside in
Naya Nagar at Mira Road and travelled daily to the city to collect garbage. On May 27, the two travelled to a different location before reaching Andheri (East) at around 7pm. They were accompanied by one more couple, which the police team managed to trace out with the help of the closed-circuit television (
CCTV).
“CCTV footages helped us to track the couple first who provided us with the lead, had helped us in nabbing Ansari. It is suspected Ansari killed Gawde by banging her head on the water tap in the toilet,” said Andheri police senior inspector Vijay Belge.
Police said it had been a challenging job for the police team as they did not have any details about the victim and the accused till manual and technical intelligence helped them to track the accused.
The matter was observed after a man employed at the public toilet alerted the police after the accused pushed him and fled away after killing the victim inside the toilet at around 7.15pm.
DCP Maheshwar Reddy supervised a team—senior inspector Vijay Belge, assistant inspector Ganesh Pisal, sub-inspector Pagar and team—worked out on the CCTV footage at the Andheri railway station and found the accused and the couple boarding the train that was heading towards Borivli.
