India may have joined the United Nations Security Council for a two year term several months ago, but is only now that the situation has become somewhat more tangible. On Friday morning, India's Permanent Representative to the to the UN took to Twitter sharing visuals from the first in-person meeting with India taking its seat at the UNSC horseshoe table.
"It has taken a full five months for India to enter the UN Security Council chambers, physically! First in-person meeting experience - a feeling of anticipation and humility to finally take India’s place at the famous UNSC's Horseshoe Table," the diplomat wrote.
For the uninitiated, India began a two year tenure as a member of the 15-nation grouping at the beginning of 2021. India will sit as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2021-22 term - the eighth time that the country has had a seat on the powerful horseshoe table.
The presidency of the council is held on a rotational basis, with each member being at the helm for a month as per alphabetical order. India will be UNSC President in August 2021 and will preside over the council again for a month in 2022.
Simply put, the UNSC is tasked with maintaining international peace and security - from calling for peaceful settlement of issues to imposing sanctions and more. "As the largest democracy we will be promoting very fundamental values like democracy, human rights and development," Tirumurti had told PTI earlier this year.
