Ujjain: High speed winds and heavy rains threw the normal life out of gear in the city late on Friday.
Bad weather which the weatherman attributed to the Yaas cyclone prevailed since afternoon. However, around 7 pm the weather started playing foul as amid thunderstorms medium to heavy downpours lashed the city for about 45 minutes. Reports of hailstorm also poured in from the outskirts of the city.
Uprooting of trees and falling of branches led to failure of power supply arrangements.
A minaret of a mosque also got damaged due to felling of a portion of a tree. A branch of a tree also fell on the newly installed oxygen plant at Government Charak Hospital.
According to Ujjain Municipal Corporation' control room, complaints of falling of trees were received from about 100 places.
As technical snag is reported to have developed at the filtration plants, the water supply arrangements are likely to be affected in many areas of the city on Saturday morning.
According to SE, Discom Aashish Aacharya, about 55 complaints of tree falling on electric wires and uprooting were received till 8 pm. Darkness enveloped over 80 per cent of the city due to power disruption, he added.
"As soon as rainfall stopped, we immediately despatched our teams for restoration of power supply, but everything is likely to be normalised by wee hours of Saturday," Aacharya said.
People are irked with the disruption of power. They expressed outrage over the lack of preparedness of the local administration despite the city experiencing high speed winds due to Yaas Cyclone. People rued that the trimming of trees near the power lines was not carried out even though monsoon is hardly a few weeks away.
The Janta is already reeling under the Curfew imposed by the local administration. A rain-soaked evening and ëpowerlessí night will test their patience further. The residents in the low-lying areas and those living in kuccha abode will have a long day ahead as they will have to clear the water and go about repairing their homes which have been affected due to the drastic swing in the mood of the weather today.
