The City University of New York will join New York State and fly flags across the University at half-staff this Memorial Weekend to honor fallen military personnel and essential workers who lost their lives due to COVID-19.
CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez said:
“We remember with profound gratitude the medical professionals, food delivery, public transportation staff, and myriad other essential workers, including our own campus security and custodial staff, who provided critical, often life-saving services during this horrific pandemic. As they tended to our most urgent needs, and those of our family members, friends and neighbors, the vast majority of us were able to safely shelter at home.
“One cannot help but see in their selflessness, sacrifice and abiding sense of duty the reflection of the brave men and women who perished before them on battlefields the world over fighting in defense of our freedoms. One of this country’s greatest traditions, certainly its most solemn, is our commemoration of their heroism each Memorial Day.
“As we embark on a journey of renewal — a dawning made possible by the sacrifices of these heroes— we must rededicate ourselves to strengthening the promise of our democracy, and to ensuring a more just and equitable society. There can be no better legacy for these brave New Yorkers and Americans. We are forever indebted to their service and sacrifice.”
