U.S. FDA gives emergency use approval for GSK-Vir COVID-19 antibody drug

(Reuters) -The U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave an emergency use authorization to the antibody treatment developed by Vir Biotechnology and GlaxoSmithKline for treating mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in people aged 12 years and older.

The antibody drug, Sotrovimab, is not authorized for patients who are hospitalized due to COVID-19 or require oxygen therapy, the health regulator said on Wednesday. (https://bit.ly/3uorQZ8)

Sotrovimab belongs to a class of drugs called monoclonal antibodies, which mimic natural antibodies that the body generates to fight off infection.

The antibody treatment will be available for COVID-19 patients in the coming weeks, GSK and Vir said, adding that they plan to submit a marketing application to the FDA in the second half of 2021.

Similar COVID-19 therapies by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly have been authorized for emergency use in the United States.

The European Union's drug regulator last week backed the use of Sotrovimab for COVID-19 patients who were at risk of severe disease and do not need supplemental oxygen.

Medics and charities for those affected by stillbirth and infant deaths welcomed the move. However, mothers’ groups warned that too many women were being pushed into stressful and traumatic inductions, without the right pain relief in place. Until now, women have been offered induction on the NHS between 41 and 42 weeks, but recent evidence shows that babies are more likely to die if the pregnancy goes to 42 weeks or beyond. The new guidelines say women should be induced as soon as possible when they hit 41 weeks in a bid to make birth safer for them and their child. Those women who choose not to be induced at 41 weeks can continue with twice-weekly monitoring, but should be told that there is no evidence this can prevent poor outcomes for mother or baby.

    Pet owners who abandon the animals they acquired during lockdown when they return to the office could face tougher sentences under plans being considered by ministers. The remit of the Government's pet theft task force has been widened to cover the abandonment of animals amid fears that a large number of pets will be discarded when workers are no longer at home to care for them. The plans could also include measures that punish people who leave dogs at home for extended periods. Ministers are also considering prosecuting "dognapping", which soared during lockdown, under animal welfare laws. Stealing a pet is a criminal offence under the Theft Act 1968, and carries a maximum prison term of seven years. A government source told The Times: "We need to start considering that it's not just a theft issue, there's also abandonment." In the first six months of lockdown, 2.2 million people bought dogs. The number of thefts increased by 19 per cent in 2020 from the previous year. Boris Johnson, who owns a dog called Dilyn, has said that dog theft can “cause huge pain and grief” to owners. Robert Buckland, the lord chancellor, said: "This task force will examine every option available to protect families from this appalling crime." David Lammy, Labour’s shadow justice secretary, told The Times: “The dreadful thought of having my dog stolen keeps me up at night.     France’s health minister has blasted as “dangerous, irresponsible and pathetic” an attempt by a mysterious “UK-based” PR agency asking influencers and YouTube personalities to publicly denigrate the Pfizer vaccine in exchange for money. Targets of the campaign, who are active in the health and science fields, said they had received an email offer by the agency of "a partnership" on behalf of a customer with "a colossal budget" but who wanted to remain anonymous and also to keep any deal secret. "Strange. I've received a partnership proposal which consists of slamming the Pfizer vaccine in a video," tweeted Leo Grasset, whose popular science channel has nearly 1.2 million subscribers on YouTube. "Colossal budget, client wants to remain incognito, and I'd have to hide the sponsorship." He added: "Incredible. The address of the London agency that contacted me is fake. They never had a presence there, it's a laser surgery centre. All staff have weird LinkedIn profiles." The profiles later disappeared, but not before he noticed that "everybody there has worked in Russia”. The authors of the emails claimed to be a London-based agency called Fazze but were hard to trace, according to French media. Le Monde newspaper said Fazze had never been registered in the UK, but may have a legal presence in the Virgin Islands. But according to the LinkedIn profile of Fazze's CEO, now deleted, the agency operates out of Moscow, said Le Monde. The Pfizer jab has gained in popularity in France after AstraZeneca fell out of favour in much of the European Union because of health concerns and delivery delays.
