Covid-19: Death toll in SA breaches 56 000 as 60 999 more vaccine shots administered

South Africa recorded 4 623 new Covid-19 infections by Wednesday and 102 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the official death toll to 56 077.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, as of Wednesday, the country recorded a total of 1 645 555 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

The total number of people vaccinated is 761 903. In total, 60 999 vaccine doses were administered in the last 24-hour cycle. Of the total number of doses administered, 282 135 were done using the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine under phase two of the national vaccine rollout.

Gauteng recorded the most confirmed active cases with 12 834, followed by the Northern Cape with 7 373 and the Free State with 7 180.

The recovery rate is 94% and 1 546 583 recoveries have been recorded.

To date, 11 452 185 tests have been completed, with 45 877 tests conducted in the last 24-hour cycle, Mkhize said.

Mkhize also reported a further 102 Covid-19-related deaths, of which 45 were recorded in North West, 24 in Gauteng, nine in the Western Cape, six in the Free State, five in Limpopo, four in the Eastern Cape, four in KwaZulu-Natal and four in Mpumalanga.

This brings the total to 56 077 official deaths.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.
