Pedestrians cover their heads to shield from the sun in New Delhi (PTI) The mercury touched 41.2 degrees Celsius in Delhi on Thursday, but there may be some respite from soaring temperatures with “very light rain” forecast for three days from Sunday onwards.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature on Friday is likely to be around 40 degrees in the capital.
On Saturday, there could be a “thundery development” followed by a possibility of “very light rain or thundershowers” for three days, as per the IMD.
However, the maximum temperature until June 2 would remain around 39 to 40 degrees Celsius, as per the forecast.
Mercury has been soaring over the last few days in the city. It was 39.4 degrees on Tuesday and 39.5 degrees on Wednesday.
It reached higher than 41.2 degrees in some parts of the city on Thursday, including Pitampura in Northwest Delhi where it was recorded at 43.6 degrees, and 43.5 degrees at Najafgarh in Southwest Delhi.
About a week ago, under the influence of Cyclone Tauktae and a Western Disturbance, Delhi had witnessed heavy showers and recorded 119.3mm of rain in 24 hours till the morning of May 20. So far this month, the city has received 144.8 mm of rainfall, which is likely to make this May the wettest since May 2008, when a total of 165mm of rain was recorded in the capital.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s average air quality index (AQI) was moderate on Thursday with a reading of 150. It is likely to improve and remain in moderate to satisfactory over the next two days, as per the Centre’s Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi.
