Dan Stevens Reveals the Reason Why He Left 'Downton Abbey,' Years After the Controversial Exit

Dan Stevens‘ abrupt and shocking exit from Downton Abbey was so upsetting for fans, and now, he’s explaining why his character was killed off.

The 38-year-old played the role of Matthew Crawley but exited the show in 2012.

Dan said he wanted more “variety” in his work and was afraid he’d be typecast as the romantic lead going forward in a new interview with The Australian.

“I try not to be resistant to too many things,” he added. “I think it’s more about when interesting roles come along, really.”

He then added about his current role, “The challenges of this role as Tom [in “I’m Your Man”] were so many that I wasn’t really thinking about it as another romantic lead.”

Dan just landed a role that previously was supposed to belong to someone else.
