MANGALURU: Even as the row over
Lakshadweep administrator Praful Khoda Patel’s proposed regulations has sparked a debate across
Kerala and other parts of the nation,
Mangaluru that shares a commercial bond with the island, also saw people expressing concern over the recent developments.
Many have expressed concern over the alleged move to destroy the island’s culture in the name of tourism.
Social activist and DYFI district president B K Imthiyaz, who had travelled to Lakshadweep, told TOI that people of Lakshadweep will not be intimidated by any moves on part of the central government, as the islanders have the spirit to fight for their rights.
“The islanders are attached to Kerala culturally, socially and educationally. They have obtained degrees from universities in Kerala, and they have the spirit to fight for their rights. The island, which is 350km away from Mangaluru, also has a strong trade relation with
Karnataka’s coastal city. We will also wait and watch the situation. If required, we will raise our voice for the people of Lakshadweep,” Imthiyaz said.
Mangaluru and Beypore of Kozhikode are the two nearest ports that have major commercial relations with the island.
Small ships carrying goods were leaving Mangaluru port when the weather was favourable, he said.
“People should oppose them, as the tourism development proposals planned in Lakshadweep can lead to disaster,” he added.
Many people from Mangaluru have been joining the chorus to express solidarity with the #SaveLakshadweep campaign through social media.
“The attempt to breach the peace in Lakshadweep for the implementation of the Sangh Parivar’s agenda should not be tolerated. It is their right to live according to their land’s culture.
Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will be with the people of Lakshadweep,” said Muneer Katipalla, state president of the outfit.
Former Mangaluru mayor K Ashraf said, “People of Lakshadweep have been visiting Bunder for trade purposes for the past several decades. Hence, we all should oppose the proposed regulations by the Lakshadweep administrator. I will join hands with like-minded organisations to oppose the central government’s move. We are also planning to submit a memorandum to the government.”
