London: The Cricket Board of England and Wales (ECB) confirmed on Wednesday that pacemaker Jofra Archer underwent surgery on May 21 to address his long-standing elbow issues.
Archer is now embarking on an intensive rehabilitation period with the ECB and Sussex medical teams.
“His progress will be reviewed by his consultant within about four weeks, at which further guidelines will be given on when he can return to bowling,” the ECB said in an official statement.
Archer, who again played for Sussex in the County Championship against Kent at Hove last week, bowled just five overs. He suffered pain in his right elbow when he bowled and as a result he could not bowl in the last two days of the match.
The English and Welsh Cricket Board (ECB) has earlier confirmed that Archer will not be ruled out in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
Earlier this year, Archer had a cut on his hand when he cleaned at his home in January shortly before flying to India to prepare for the Test series.
The ECB’s medical team recovered from the injury throughout the tour, and this did not affect its availability. A glass fragment was removed from his right finger on his right hand during the operation in March.
Archer played two Tests and all five T20Is against India, then was excluded from the ODI series and the first half of the IPL.
England and New Zealand plan to close horns in a two-match Test series, which kicks off on 2 June.
