The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. (File) Amid a drop in active cases, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has shut down five Covid Care Centres. At the same time, two new Covid hospitals with 350-bed capacity will become operational on June 5.
PCMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Vikas Dhakane said on Tuesday that the civic administration has decided to shut down five Covid Care Centres (CCC)s in which the total bed capacity is 1,000 beds. “These CCCs actually did not have a single patient for many days and so, we decided to close them as positive cases have been consistently going down,” he said.

Dhakane added, “These CCCs will be reopened at short notice if positive cases start going up again. They have been shut temporarily.”
According to PCMC additional health chief Dr Pavan Salve, there are as many as 6,000 active cases in the industrial city. “Of these, 3,800 patients have been hospitalised while 2,200 are in home isolation,” he said.
The number of people in home isolatation has been going down after peaking at 15,000. On Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Patil said they would henceforth prefer admitting patients to Covid Care Centres rather than isolating them at home. Civic officials said this is being done to prevent infection from spreading to family members. This will also prevent home-isolated patients from violating Covid-19 norms by roaming outside their houses, officials said.
Meanwhile, two new Covid hospitals at Akurdi and Thergaon will become functional on June 5, Dhakane said. “The commissioner has given directions to start operations at the two Covid hospitals, which have a 350-bed capacity including oxygen and ventilator beds,” he said.
In another decision, the PCMC chief has directed zonal officers to vaccinate government and civic employees at their workplaces. “The zonal officers will have to make arrangements for vaccination of government and civic staff,” he added.
