Interestingly, 80,671 out of 1,86,670 healthcare workers are yet to take their second jab while 1,05,041 out of 1,34,226 frontline workers are yet to take their second dose.
Yes! That is the percentage of the population who have taken their first dose in the 18- 44 age group. Despite health experts pushing for the fast-tracking of vaccination drive only one percent of Bengalureans could afford it so far. This lack holds a number of reasons for low statistics such as lack of on-spot registration, vaccine hesitancy, and the gap in demand and supply have contributed to the low figure.
According to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) data up to May 21, 1,17,02,198 have been identified as eligible beneficiaries for vaccination. Out of this population, a major chunk is from the 18-44 age group.
Another interesting trend is that on-spot vaccination is the most preferred choice for Bengalureans compared to prior registration. Around 70 percent of vaccinations have been on spot.
Dr. HN Krishnamurthy, a general physician said, “there are multiple factors for low vaccination. Initially, vaccination hesitancy was a major reason. This is the reason why many healthcare workers are yet to take the shot. However with Covid cases increasing there was a rush for vaccines among a section of people even though there are still many who prefer not to take vaccines. Though the demand for vaccines has risen the supply has not met the demand. With the center stating that the states and private hospitals need to procure vaccines for 18 plus cater=gory, many private hospitals have not been able to procure the vaccines yet".
