A devastating fire has claimed the lives of two people, and destroyed two Wendy houses and a car in Woodlands, Mitchells Plain.

It is unclear what started the fire. City of Cape Town firefighters were summoned to the blaze in Sandury Road at 00:26 on Wednesday.

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said that when they arrived, they found informal structures burning, but managed to contain and extinguish the blaze by 01:42.

"Two Wendy houses were destroyed and a motor vehicle damaged in the fire," he said.

"The bodies of the man and woman were found in one of the structures."

According to police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk, the man was aged 34 and the woman 30.

Medics declared them both dead on the scene.
