NEW DELHI: Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, a 1985 batch IPS officer serving as CISF DG, on Wednesday took charge as the CBI director.
The Central Bureau of Investigation was working without a regular chief for over three months after Rishi Kumar Shukla completed his two-year tenure on February 3.
Jaiswal was chosen from a shortlist of three officers—the other two being SSB chief Kumar Rajesh Chandra and special secretary in MHA V S K Kaumudi—cleared by the PM-led selection panel on Monday.
Jaiswal, ex-Maharashtra DGP and former Mumbai top cop, was the seniormost officer in the panel.
Jaiswal was in 2018 a surprise choice for the Mumbai police commissioner’s post in place of Datta Padsalgikar, who was promoted then as DGP. It required the intervention of the PMO at that time to relieve Jaiswal, known for his honesty and integrity. Following the retirement of Padsalgikar, Jaiswal was appointed state DGP.
Among the big cases he dealt with were the Telgi stamp paper scam in 2005, the 2006 serial train blasts case and the Malegaon blasts case.
Significantly, Jaiswal’s appointment has sent shockwaves in the ruling MVA in Maharashtra. Currently, following a petition filed by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh against former home minister Anil Deshmukh, the CBI has, on the directives of Bombay HC, filed a first information report against Deshmukh.
