Safaricom drops interest in Ethio Telcom after securing licence

Wednesday 26 May 2021 | 10:14 CET | News
Kenyan operator Safaricom says it is no longer interested in a stake in Ethiopia's state-owned Ethio Telecom after a consortium it leads won a licenxe to operate in the country, The Star reported. Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said the desire for a stake in Ethiopia's only telecom firm has been overtaken by events and it is now keen on becoming a worthy competitor in the market. In October 2019, Safaricom had expressed an interest in Ethio Telecom, which is currently in the final stages of partial privatisation.
