Vaigankar, Benkar to be elected unopposed as MMC chairperson, deputy

Mapusa: Shubhangi Vaigankar and Chandrashekhar Benkar have filed their nomination for the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council. The duo are likely to be elected unopposed during a special meeting scheduled on Thursday.

With the ending of the last date for filing of nominations for the post of chairperson and vice- chairperson for Mapusa municipality the picture is now clear that the BJP-backed panel Mapusa Development Front will once again form the council in Mapusa. The post of chairperson for Mapusa municipal council is reserved for women. 

Accordingly on Wednesday Shubhangi Vaigankar and Chandrashekhar Benkar in the presence of Mapusa MLA Joshua De Souza submitted their nomination forms before the chief officer Clen Madeira. At the end of the nomination process only one nomination form was received for both posts.

The official announcement declaring Vaigankar and Benkar as chairperson and vice-chairperson respectively will be held at a special meeting on Thursday.

Currently out of 20 councillors, Mapusa Development Front has got 14 councillors on its side while Mapsekarancho Ekvot has got five councilors and one councillor Anand Bhaidkar is independent.

Interacting with the media, Mapusa MLA Joshua De Souza said that Wednesday was the last date for filing of nomination for chairperson and vice chairperson and accordingly his candidates have filled their nominations.

“Since only one nomination of Vaigankar and Benkar for the post of chairperson and vice chairperson was received on the last date, our candidates will be elected unopposed in the meeting on Thursday” said De Souza.
