With Over 30% of Total Covid Deaths, May Turns Out to Be Deadliest Month of Pandemic
May has turned out to be the deadliest month since the outbreak of coronavirus. Since May 1, India has reported 95,390 deaths related to the infection, accounting for 31.41 percent of the total deaths. In terms of infections, India reported 2.67 crore cases to date, Union Health Ministry says. Of these, 1.45 crore were reported since April 1, accounting for 54.32 percent of the total cases, as per the Ministry data analysed by NW18. In May alone, the cases reported were 79.89 lakh, about 30 percent of the total infections. The country’s coronavirus death toll was 3,03,720 as of Monday morning, the Union Health Ministry shows.

At a time when several states are witnessing surge in number of black and white fungus cases, a 45-year-old patient in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad was on Monday found infected with yellow fungus, which is said to be more dangerous than the other two fungal infections. The person is currently being treated at a city-based private hospital under ENT surgeon Dr Brij Pal Tyagi’s supervision. Speaking on the same, Dr Tyagi said the patient is infected with all three kinds of funguses - black, white and yellow. “A 45-year-old patient’s sinus was normal in CT scan but after performing endoscopy we came to know that he contracted three types of fungi (black, white and yellow). Yellow fungus is generally found in reptiles. I found this first time in human," he said.
Major Social Media Firms Yet To Comply With Govt Rules As Deadline Nears, May Invite Action
Social media companies such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram “may become liable for criminal action” in India and lose their status as “intermediaries” that grant them certain exemptions if they do not comply with new rules notified by the government by May 26, official sources said on Monday. They said the electronics and information and technology ministry notified the rules in the gazette on February 25 and asked social media companies to comply within three months. Except Indian company Koo — which has a user base of above 50 lakhs — significant social media intermediaries have not appointed grievance officers or nodal contact persons, as specified in the rules.
Delhi Police Visits Twitter India Offices in Delhi, Gurugram Amid ‘Congress Toolkit Controversy’

Cyclone Yaas May Be More Severe Than Amphan, Says Mamata Hours After Hitting Out At Shah Over Funds
Cyclone Yaas may affect at least 20 districts of West Bengal and its impact could be more severe than Amphan that hit the state last year, said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday. She said the government has made all necessary arrangements in dealing with the aftermath of the cyclone and is targeting to shift at least 10 lakh people to safer places to avoid any loss of life. The Met department said the cyclonic storm is very likely to make a landfall near Balasore in north Odisha along the West Bengal border with a speed of 155 kmph to 165 kmph, gusting to 185 kmph, around noon on May 26.
Fugitive Businessman Mehul Choksi Goes Missing in Antigua, Claims Media
Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi is understood to have gone missing in Antigua and Barbuda with the police launching a manhunt to trace him since Sunday, local media outlets reported. “Antiguanewsroom", a local media outlet, quoted Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney on Tuesday that the police are “following up on the whereabouts of Indian businessman Mehul Choksi", who is “rumoured" to be missing. The media reports say Choksi, who had taken the citizenship of the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, was seen driving in the southern area of the island on Sunday. Later, his vehicle was found but there was no trace of Choksi, the reports said.
