Gold jewellery hallmarking deadline extended to June 15

Consumer affairs minister Piyush Goyal said that consumers must get Hallmark-certified gold at the earliest, indicating that there is unlikely to be any further postponement.
The government has extended the deadline for hallmarking gold jewellery to June 15 from June 1 in view of the Covid-19 second wave.

Hallmarking is a certification of precious metals and has been voluntary so far.

“The government has accepted the request of stakeholders to give jewellers some more time to get prepared for implementation and resolve issues,” said a senior official.

A committee has been formed to ensure proper coordination and resolve implementation issues, the official added.
