M B Rajesh elected speaker of Kerala assembly

After the election, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition leader V D Satheesan accompanied M B Rajesh to the speaker’s chair.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: M B Rajesh has been elected as the speaker of the Kerala assembly.
In the election held in the House on Tuesday morning, Rajesh got 96 votes of the 140 members.
P C Vishnunath from the Congress had contested against Rajesh who got 40 votes.
Protem speaker P T A Rahim did not vote.
Three members have not taken the oath due to ill health.
M B Rajesh is the first member of the state legislature even though he has represented Palakkad in the 16th Lok Sabha.
This is the first time that a first time MLA is becoming a speaker of the House.
He is the 23rd speaker of the Kerala assembly.
After the election, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition leader V D Satheesan accompanied M B Rajesh to the Speaker’s chair.
It also assumes significance that a former speaker is also a member of the House at present and is now a minister in the state cabinet.
He was the speaker of the House between 2006 and 2011.
M B Rajesh is born to Balakrishnan Nair and M K Remani and is a native of Chalavara, Shoranur in Palakkad district.
He is a graduate in law from the University of Kerala and a postgraduate in Economics from the NSS College, Ottapalam.
