Using AWS Glacier as a backup repository

Backup and data protection specialist Veeam has used its VeeamON 2021 online conference to reveal some of its plans for the year.

Before the year is out, Veeam intends to deliver new features for its cloud backup products, as well as the first integration of Kasten K10 for Kubernetes into Veeam Platform.

Veeam's single-platform, cloud-native backup for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud is gaining support for archive object storage.

This includes Amazon S3 Glacier and Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive, Azure Archive Storage, and Google Cloud Archive Cloud Storage.

Veeam Platform will also see expanded support for cloud-native backup and recovery of Amazon EFS and Azure SQL

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 v6 gains a self-service portal so users can recover their own data when needed. This speeds recovery as they don't need to wait for someone in IT to do the job, and those IT specialists are freed to work on more valuable tasks.

Version 6 also supports Azure Archive and AWS Amazon S3 Glacier and Glacier Deep Archive. A secondary copy of a backup can be quickly made from object storage to one of these services, allowing the 3-2-1 data protection rule to be applied to Office 365 data.

"Over the past 18 months, Veeam enjoyed its most prolific product launch period, bringing to market more than 20 new offerings such as Veeam V10 and V11, Veeam Backup for Google Cloud, updates for Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, AWS and Microsoft Office 365 and many, many more," said Veeam CTO and senior vice president of product strategy Danny Allan.

"We are continually innovating and know customers are looking to protect their data across multi-cloud environments; with Veeam's single platform we are helping our customers ensure that every piece of data, every workload is safe, secure and easily recoverable no matter where they reside. We are proud of our success, and that we are now number two in the market, and we know that this is just the tip of the iceberg."

Veeam announced support for Red Hat Virtualization (RHV) backup n response to customer demands from key verticals, large enterprises, and service providers. This is particularly important to customers in certain regions including APJ, Allan observed

It provides modern data protection for RHV from the existing Veeam control plane and storage repositories.

Support includes agentless, image-level backup and recovery of RHV virtual machines, taking advantage of RHV's Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for greater efficiency.

Veeam's acquisition of Kubernetes backup specialist Kasten has gone even better than expected. "That's been a very successful acquisition," said Allan.

The first step in integrating Kasten K10 for Kubernetes with the Veeam Platform will be to allow it to write to Veeam repositories, including immutable locations.

In addition to centralising the backup of Kubernetes and other workloads, this will help prepare for the even more widespread use of containers, something Allan sees as a major industry trend.

"With these demonstrations [at VeeamON], we are upping the ante for modern data protection, ensuring our customers can protect all workloads across all environments; Veeam continues to set the standard for the industry", added Allan.

"Veeam has proven itself to be in tune with customer needs – the feedback we have received for V11 proves that – and I am confident with these new solutions coming to market later this year, we'll yet again deliver on what our 400,000-plus customers require and help them drive their digital transformation journeys."

Veeam's recent milestones include:

Moving more than 100PB of data into its top three cloud object storage providers during the first quarter of 2021, after moving 242PB in the whole of 2020.

More than 1EB of data protected on object storage in the last two years.

Passing one million active Veeam Backup & Replication installations, including those using the community edition.

Fifteen million mailboxes protected by Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365, the company's fastest growing product for the past two years.

Seventeen new product releases in the last 12 months.

Validated support for 83 primary storage arrays, 85 secondary storage systems, 37 object storage systems (12 of which are immutable) including support across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Storage.

Thirteen consecutive quarters of double-digit growth.

"Although our history of solid growth and profitability is unrivalled in the industry, I believe that Veeam will become the number one industry leader in total revenue within the next two years," said Allan.
