Ruling JDU’s two-term Raniganj MLA Achmit Rishidev has questioned poor health infrastructure in Bihar’s smaller districts after his wife Manjula Devi succumbed to Covid-19 on May 19.
Rishidev told ET that his wife needed ventilator support, which wasn’t available in Araria and nearby Forbesganj. “I arranged for a ventilator bed in Murliganj and took my wife in my own car. But she died before she could reach there,” Rishidev said.
Narrating the incident, he said his wife could have been saved “had she received oxygen support in time and if there was better medical infrastructure”.
“The government is trying to help people by increasing the availability of medical facilities and I have no complaints regarding that. But everyone from Araria can’t go to Bhagalpur or Patna for treatment,” Rishidev told ET, adding: “I tried hard to save my wife but couldn’t. Someone should take the responsibility of this death. I don’t want other people to suffer like this.”
Araria’s Civil Hospital had received six ventilators under PM Cares, but all were lying idle as there was no technician or staff to run it.
“I gave ₹2 crore from MLA fund for Covid. I want to ask where this money went. I had given it to improve health facilities in our area. I got a call from CM Nitish Kumar and I have told him everything,” he added.
Rishidev said he also received a call from Bihar health minister Mangal Pandey. “I asked Pandey Ji who is responsible for my wife’s death,” he said.
The state government has assured that his concerns will be looked into.
