MANGALURU: The
New Mangaluru Port Trust (NMPT), handled the fifth Navy vessel INS Shardul, carrying approximately 190MT of
liquid medical oxygen (LMO) and 1,200 oxygen cylinders from Kuwait.
The cargoes were loaded on the naval vessel at Shuwaikh Port and sailed out from Kuwait on May 15.
To date, five naval vessels have arrived at NMPT carrying medical oxygen and equipment under the Samudra Setu-II operation launched by the
Indian Navy.
The vessel carried seven liquid medical oxygen filled ISO containers of net weight 20MT each, 60 pallets of oxygen cylinders of one ton each and two semi-trailers filled with 25 tons of liquid medical oxygen each.
The vessel was berthed on highest priority as per the directives of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Pratap Reddy, additional DGP (Law & Order) and chairman of State LMO Coordination Committee, was present to oversee the unloading of the medical aid.
The representatives of the Indian Red Cross Society's Dakshina Kannada unit received the consignment along with top officials of the Port Navy,
Coast Guard, Customs and district administration
Binoy Nambiar, nodal officer for oxygen, Dakshina Kannada said that two semi-trailers filled with 25 tons of liquid medical oxygen each will be used by Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The seven Liquid Medical Oxygen filled ISO containers will go to Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Mandya and Uttara Kannada.
Meanwhile, there is a slight reduction in the oxygen demand by hospitals in the district.
