Odisha reports 10,939 new covid cases, 33 deaths in a single day

Bhubaneswar, May 25 (UNI) Odisha reported 10,939 new covid infection cases in the past 24 hours pushing the total covid tally in the state to 7,14,380 while the covid toll surged to 2549 with 33 more succumbing to the virus.

In May till date, the daily covid tally has reported more than 10 k on twenty times out of which on four occasions the positive cases surpassed 12K while, the daily caseload had crossed 11K on seven times notwithstanding the lockdown and weekend shutdown imposed by the state government.

The lockdown which was enforced on May 5 to May 19 was further extended to June 1 along with the weekend shut down from May 1 last

Health and Family Welfare department sources said in the past 24 hours 6178 covid positive cases were reported from quarantine centres and 4761 as local contact cases from the 30 districts in the state.

Khordha registered the highest number of 1298 cases followed by Cuttack (922), Angul (819), Mayurbhanj( 604), Jajpur ( 541)and Sundargarh ( 512).

As many as 33 covid patients under treatment in various hospitals succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours.

They included seven from Khordha district., four each from Angul, Jharsuguda and Kalahandi district, three each from Sambalpur and Sundargarh, two each from Ganjam and Kendrapra and one each in four other districts.

The active cases in the state continue to remain over one lakh for 13 consecutive days. The number stands at 1,10,554.

In May till midnight of 24, the covid positive cases surged to 2,59,773 and the death toll mounted to 495 while2,14,974 people were recovered from the virus including 11,614 on Friday.

Meanwhile, the vaccination programme was suspended in Balasore, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj districts for three days beginning from today as these districts are all likely to be severely affected by severe cyclonic storm Yaas which would hit the coast on May 26
