Kevin McCarthy Condemns Marjorie Taylor Greene's Holocaust, Mask Comparison

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) both condemned Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s ongoing efforts to liken pandemic-era mask recommendations to the Holocaust on Tuesday.

“Marjorie is wrong, and her intentional decision to compare the horrors of the Holocaust with wearing masks is appalling. The Holocaust is the greatest atrocity committed in history. The fact that this needs to be stated today is deeply troubling,” McCarthy said in a statement.

“Let me be clear: the House Republican Conference condemns this language,” he concluded.

McConnell remarked simply on Greene’s words. “Once again an outrageous and reprehensible comment,” he said.

The House GOP leader also took the opportunity to swipe at Democrats as some in the party have questioned the United States’ historically unwavering support for Israel, claiming that “anti-Semitism is on the rise in the Democrat Party.”

Hours before, Greene (R-Ga.) had weighed in on a Tennessee grocery store’s decision to allow vaccinated store employees and customers to go unmasked in the building. Vaccinated employees would have “a vaccination logo” on their name badges, local CBS affiliate WVLT reported. Greene claimed that the vaccination logos were “just like” how “the Nazi’s [sic] forced Jewish people to wear a gold star.”

“Vaccine passports & mask mandates create discrimination against unvaxxed people,” Greene wrote. She had already doubled down on the comparison over the weekend amid criticism that it trivialized an event that killed millions of Jewish people in World War II.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) also made it clear that he “does not agree with these comments and condemns these comparisons to the Holocaust.” Yet he also made a dubious link between elected Democrats questioning Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and anti-Semitism.

This is so obviously unconstitutional, you wouldn’t even put it on an exam.” Trump was banned from Twitter and removed from other platforms over his false claims of a stolen election and for inciting the deadly 6 January attack on the US Capitol. He has launched a blog which has attracted a meagre audience. Under Florida’s Stop Social Media Censorship Act, which DeSantis signed on Monday, social media giants such as Apple, Facebook, Google and Twitter could be fined up to $250,000 a day for every statewide political candidate removed from their platforms, and $25,000 a day for other candidates. Users must be warned if fact checks or other notices of disputed information are attached to posts. Those users, or the Florida state attorney, can sue tech companies for violations. “We took action to ensure that ‘We the People’, real Floridians across the Sunshine State, are guaranteed protection against the Silicon Valley elites,” DeSantis said. “Many in our state have experienced censorship and other tyrannical behavior firsthand in Cuba and Venezuela. If Big Tech censors enforce rules inconsistently, to discriminate in favor of the dominant Silicon Valley ideology, they will now be held accountable.” Those invited by DeSantis to the bill signing included James O’Keefe, a far-right activist whose Project Veritas operation has engaged in disinformation campaigns to expose what it sees as bias in the media. Tactics have included attempting to place fake stories. Democrats warned that the new bill was unconstitutional and would leave taxpayers on the hook for the costs of failed efforts to defend it. “Ultimately we’re probably going to lose and the people who are going to pay are really not us sitting at these tables, it’s going to be the taxpayers,” the state Democratic congressman Joe Geller said during one debate, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Corbin Barthold, internet policy counsel for the advocacy group TechFreedom, called the law “a brazen assault on the first amendment”. “DeSantis wants to compel websites to speak,” he said. “He can’t. He wants consumer protection law to erase free-speech rights. It won’t. DeSantis is attacking the very constitutional principles Republicans just spent four years putting conservatives on the courts to protect.” DeSantis insisted the law was about discrimination. “When you de-platform the president of the United States but you let Ayatollah Khamenei talk about killing Jews, that is wrong,” he told reporters in Miami.

    The philanthropic foundations of both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been cleared of breaking charity law following a 12-month review. Republic, the anti-monarchy campaign group, apologised to the Sussexes for the “public damage” it had caused in raising concerns about the “inappropriate use” of funds. The Charity Commission launched a review after the group asked it to look at the transfer of money from the Royal Foundation to the MWX Foundation, formerly Sussex Royal, and to Travalyst, Prince Harry's sustainable travel project. The grants of almost £300,000 included £145,000 given to Sussex Royal to fund its set-up and launch in 2019 and a further £150,000 given to deliver Travalyst’s programme. Sussex Royal in turn transferred the funds to Travalyst. The regulator found that neither of the royal charities had acted outside charity law. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “We are pleased that the Charity Commission has confirmed what we knew from the start: that MWX Foundation, formerly Sussex Royal, complied fully with UK charity law in its handling and transferring of funds and grants. “Today’s update provides complete closure to this review and ultimately underscores both the legitimacy of the former charity and the baselessness of the claims against it.” Republic said: “We apologise unreservedly to the charities and personally to The Duke of Sussex for our actions, and the public damage that has been caused as a result of widely publicised untrue claims.” The Charity Commission found that almost half of MWX Foundation’s funds were spent on legal and administrative costs after it was closed down in “difficult and unexpected circumstances” just 12 months after it was established. It said the spending was not unreasonable given the “unexpected events and unique circumstance which surrounded this charity”, and as such did not consider further action required. Helen Earner, director of regulatory services at the Charity Commission, suggested that the substantial costs incurred in setting up and winding down charities should have been considered when Sussex Royal was established in 2019. She said the MWX Foundation should have done more to document its decisions, especially regarding its expenditure on legal and administrative costs. “We also note that a substantial proportion of funds went into setting up and then winding up a charity that was active for a relatively short period of time," she said. “Trustees cannot predict future events when establishing a new charity – circumstances can change after a charity has been set up. “But all trustees, before setting up a charity, should think about the longer term, and consider carefully whether a new charity is the best way of achieving the intended aims. This helps ensure that set up costs are offset by longer-term impact.” The “regulatory and compliance case” examined concerns about Sussex Royal dating back to before the couple shut it down last July following their move to the US. Its name was changed after they were told they could no longer use the term “royal” after stepping back from official public duties. It is understood that some of the trustees of the Royal Foundation had expressed “disappointment" that the money given to Sussex Royal was effectively wasted on a foundation was soon to be dissolved. It concluded that the transfer of funds to MWX was in line with the governing document of the Royal Foundation, and allowed under charity law. The transfer of funds by MWX to Travalyst was also lawful as Travalyst could receive charitable funds for the promotion of sustainable travel, which is a charitable activity. The regulator said it had provided advice to ensure the funds are applied for solely charitable purposes. It also confirmed that there was no evidence to suggest that any conflicts of interest between MWX and Travalyst were managed inappropriately. MWX Foundation and subsidiary MWX Trading have both been formally wound down this month, with liquidators appointed. In their place, the Sussexes set up Archewell, their US-based non-profit organisation.
