Google's much-talked-about operating system Fuchsia OS is finally available on commercially available devices. It has been released quietly for first-gen Nest Hub devices. The quiet announcement was made by Petr Hosek, Technical Lead for Google, through a tweet. He said, "You don't ship a new operating system every day, but today is that day."

The first-gen Nest Hub devices were released in 2018 and those ones are eligible for the update. It should be noted that it would take "several months" for the whole process to complete. It is available only for Preview Program uses now but will expand to others gradually. This is an over-the-air update that will replace the currently-used Linux-based Cast OS.

As per the 9to5Google report, the overall user interface and experience of Nest Hub users will remain unchanged. It is said to be so identical that many users will not even realize that the underlying operating system has been switched. This is because of the way Google has developed smart device experiences.

Fuchsia OS reports have been making rounds in the tech space since late 2016. It was originally speculated to bring a complete UI revamp for all the devices that it would run on. It was then said to be available for Pixelbook in 2018 followed by the first reports of it being tested on Home Hub (now Nest Hub) emerging towards the end of that year. Most recently, Google opened Fuchsia OS development for developers outside its own circle in 2020.
