Today, 25 May, marks the 26th anniversary of the opening game of the 1995 Rugby World Cup as the Springboks faced then world champions Australia at Newlands in Cape Town.
With president Nelson Mandela in attendance, the Boks beat the more fancied Wallabies 27-18 with memorable tries from Pieter Hendriks and Joel Stransky.
Stransky added a conversion, four penalties and a drop goal to get South Africa off to a winning note.
Of course, it all ended in glory with a 15-12 victory over the All Blacks at Ellis Park in the final on 24 June 1995 in front of 63 000 jubilant fans.

#LionsRewind | Lions wing Pieter Hendriks was responsible for the Springboks’ opening try in the 1995 RWC against Australia. Hendriks ran around Wallaby wing David Campese. But watch closely. Did he dot down that try? Listen to our podcast with Pieter later today to find out. pic.twitter.com/36teIRNIUx
