South Africa recorded 2 383 new Covid-19 infections by Monday and 72 new Covid-19-related deaths, taking the official death toll to 55 874.

According to a statement by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, as of Monday, the country recorded a total of 1 637 848 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

The total number of people vaccinated is 651 628, with 4 542 vaccine doses administered in the last 24-hour cycle. Of the total number of people vaccinated, 171 860 were administered using the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine under phase two of the national vaccination rollout.

As of Monday, Gauteng recorded the most confirmed active cases with 11 108, followed by the Northern Cape with 7 940 and the Free State with 7 166.

The recovery rate is 94.1% and 1 541 250 recoveries have been recorded.

To date, 11 378 282 tests have been completed, with 23 352 tests conducted in the last 24-hour cycle, Mkhize said.

Mkhize also reported a further 72 Covid-19-related deaths, of which 21 were recorded in the Free State, 13 in Limpopo, 13 in the Western Cape, seven in Gauteng, six in the Eastern Cape, six in Mpumalanga and six in the Northern Cape.

This brings the total to 55 874 official deaths.

"We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased," Mkhize said.
