PANAJI: While construction of the greenfield international
airport at
Mopa continues, the state government has begun the process to supply
water for the airport. The Water Resources Department (WRD) plans to lay a pipeline from Nagzar village in Pernem to Mopa airport along with a surge suppression system to protect against any rupture of the pipelines due to the high pressure.
The
project is estimated to cost Rs 28.6 lakh, said WRD officials. While the project has already been tendered, the
bids are expected to be opened later this week, by Wednesday. The project entails a 300mm pipe along with an automatic surge control panel and will
supply raw water to the airport which is expected to be operational in August 2022.
According to the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report the upcoming airport will require 1.2 million litres per day (MLD) of water during phase 1 which will be sourced from the Tillari irrigation canal. Raw water requirement could increase to 1.8 MLD by phase II. The report expects 80% of the water consumption to result in waste water and sewage. The maximum water demand and sewage generation beyond 2045 is estimated as 6 MLD and about 5 MLD, respectively.
