Cyclone “Yaas” will cross the north Odisha-West Bengal coast between Paradip and Sagar islands by May 26 evening as a “very severe cyclonic storm”, the IMD said today.
According to the weather office, the satellite imageries and ocean buoy observations indicate that yesterday’s “low pressure area” that became well-marked over the east central Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a depression.

The depression is very likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify into a “cyclonic storm” by tomorrow morning and subsequently into a “very severe cyclonic storm” in the next 24 hours. It will continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach northwest Bay of Bengal near West Bengal and north Odisha coasts by May 26 morning.
State governments as well as the Centre are preparing for the cyclone that will bring winds with a speed ranging 155-165 kmph.
The IMD said “Yaas” would make landfall with the wind speed ranging 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph. It is likely to cause heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of West Bengal and north Odisha.
