Hannibal local businesses look forward to tourism pick up speed

The past two summers proved to be quite tricky for Hannibal business owners; however, they are ready and hopeful for tourists to return this year.

According to local business owners, an increase in tourism is what it’ll take to witness businesses gather momentum.
Mark Twain Riverboat captain Steve Terry said that their business was affected in 2019 due to flooding and also in 2020 due to the pandemic. In spite of that, he has high hopes for a comeback this year.

“We’re hoping that as people get vaccinated and they get out and about, people want to come to Hannibal and they want to experience what we have to offer here,” Terry said.

He opined that majority of tourists travel from St. Louis, Chicago, and Springfield, Illinois for weekend trips.

“We’re starting to see a lot of that already. People are wanting to get out and enjoy. This could possibly be an excellent season for Hannibal, Missouri. It’s just a matter of time to where it comes together,” said Terry.

Terry said that he thinks that businesses will heighten next weekend with the return of Twain on Main festival. The festival celebrates American Writer Samuel Clemens with a Mark Twain festival with food, arts and crafts, music and more. This festival usually attracts people from all over.
