The new generation of Mahindra Scorpio is one of the most awaited launches in our country. The Scorpio has been known for its rugged nature and butch SUV looks. The new-gen Scorpio was supposed to launch by the end of this year. However, because of the pandemic and shortage of semiconductors, the launch of the SUV has been postponed. The Scorpio will now be launching somewhere around February 2022.

Mahindra is not the only manufacturer that has delayed the launch. Maruti Suzuki delayed the launch of the new generation Celerio, Skoda delayed the launch of the Octavia and the Kushaq and Hyundai postponed the launch of the Alcazar. These launches were postponed because of the increasing number of coronavirus cases in our country.

Then there is the shortage of semiconductors that the world is currently facing. Because of the shortage, some manufacturers also had to halt their production. Semiconductors are widely used in vehicles. Features like automatic headlamps, tyre pressure monitoring system, multi-information display, instrument gauges, parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers and other electronics rely on microprocessors. The infotainment system also uses microprocessors. Then there are the safety systems like the Anti-lock braking system module and other safety tech that also rely on semiconductors to function.

Mahindra Scorpio

The new Scorpio is based on a reworked version of the ladder frame chassis. This should help in improving the handling of the SUV. Mahindra has also increased the dimensions of the SUV. Due to this the road presence of the new Scorpio has increased exponentially. It comes with three-row seats so it will be a 7-seater SUV.

Mahindra will be offering the  Scorpio with a 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine that comes with direct injection and there will also be a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. These are the same engines that we have seen on the new Thar. The engines have been praised for their refinement and power delivery.

Because the Scorpio is a much bigger vehicle, the engine outputs will be tuned to produce more power and torque. The diesel engine could produce somewhere around 140 to 150 PS while the petrol engine should produce 160 to 180 PS. Both the engines will be offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The power and torque will be transferred to all four wheels through a 4×4 system that will come with 4-High, 4-Low and 2-High modes. The 4×4 system will be offered only on the higher variants. There will also be different driving modes such as wet or sand.

The Scorpio will now be a much more premium SUV than what we have seen till now. It will also be better equipped than the current one. There will be twin-pod LED headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lamps and LED tail lamps. It will feature an all-new user interface for the touchscreen infotainment system that will support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The SUV will come with dual-zone climate control, multi-information display, analogue gauges, cruise control, push-button to start/stop, keyless entry and much more.
