GMC Hummer electric pickup is definitely not a lightweight

    What weighs about 4.5 tons and has a big trunk in the front?

    If you said either an adult male Asian elephant or the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, you're correct.

    But only one of them can go from 0 to 60 mph in about 3 seconds. We assume an elephant can't crab-walk, either, though zoology isn't really our area of expertise.

    GMC confirmed last week that a fully loaded 2022 Hummer Edition 1 will weigh 9,046 pounds, or a little more than two base-level Sierra full-size pickups. It will be more than 900 pounds heavier than the original Hummer H1 and about 700 pounds more than a dual-wheeled Sierra 3500 crew cab diesel.

    The reason, of course, is the heavy 24-module Ultium battery pack that gives the Hummer EV an estimated 350 miles of range. Batteries make most EVs significantly heavier than their gasoline-powered counterparts — though few, if any, of the other models headed to dealerships in the coming years are likely to match the Hummer's curb weight, which was first reported by GM-Trucks.com. (Few will also top the Edition 1's price: $112,595.)

    Then again, the Hummer isn't very representative of most EVs in the pipeline at General Motors or any other automaker.

    GMC designed the Hummer to be a supertruck for those who can afford it to have a ton — or rather, 4.5 tons — of fun driving. A spokesman for the brand said that, unlike an elephant, the Hummer "is bound to shatter expectations of what an electric vehicle can do."
