MORIGAON, May 23: Over 500 passengers, who de-boarded at the Jagiroad railway station in Morigaon district, created disorder and fled the facility to escape mandatory Covid-19 testing.
Morigaon deputy commissioner Simarekha Bhuyan asserted that criminal action will be initiated against all of them.
“We have already alerted all our circle officers, lat mandals and gaon burahs to trace out the people who fled from the station. Some of them have already been traced out. We are taking criminal action against all of them,” Bhuyan told ‘The Hills Times’.
“Efforts are on to trace the drivers and necessary actions are being taken for their safe return,” she added.
All the passengers were believed to be migrant workers and were returning to Assam from Kerala through Kanyakumari Express.
As the train stopped at Jagiroad railway station, more than five hundred passengers got down from the train and started to catch four wheelers and three wheelers as fast as they could without going for the mandatory Covid-19 test.
Those who fled from the station hailed from Morigaon, Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts.
However, 144 passengers turned up for Covid testing and of them 4 tested Covid-19 positive.
They have been put under home isolation.
