Two Sri Lanka players and a coach test positive for Covid-19 hours before first ODI
Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh is in doubt after two players and a coach from Sri Lanka's contingent have tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of the first ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka.
The series opener, scheduled for Sunday, is unlikely to be called off, according to BCB officials. But there is talk in the Sri Lanka camp about bringing the team home, with medical professionals on the Sri Lanka side unhappy about aspects of the bubble that has been set up for them. Sri Lanka are especially wary as they have a limited-overs tour of England coming up in June, as well. At any rate, they are currently awaiting the results of a second RT-PCR test.
Of the three who have tested positive, one has already had Covid-19, so his result is believed to be a false positive, and of little concern. The coach - who is the oldest of the three to test positive - has also had both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine. In fact, everyone in the Sri Lanka touring party has had at least one dose of a Covid vaccine, which means that chance of serious illness should be low.
The breach of the bubble remains worrying for them however. A medical professional that advises the Sri Lanka team told ESPNcricinfo there were concerns that areas that should have been set aside for the exclusive use of team members had been breached. And that the bubble that had been put in place for this series was not as robust as the one the BCB had installed for West Indies' tour of Bangladesh, in January.
Sri Lanka have played in four international series since December, but this is the first time members of a touring contingent have tested positive for Covid-19.
The three-match ODI series is part of the World Cup Super League.
