JORHAT: About 50 families were displaced after an embankment was breached in Tezpur on Saturday following a massive erosion as the water level of Jia-Bhoroli river in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district kept rising.
Senior government officials rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation.
The tributary of the Brahmaputa breached its embankment at Koriani Nepali Gaon in Tezpur on Saturday morning.
The erosion at the site had continued for the past week and finally breached the river dyke. A vast portion of nearby paddy fields has also been badly damaged. Displaced families have taken shelter in nearby areas.
Deputy commissioner, Sonitpur, Bhupesh Chandra Das, visited the erosion-hit areas at Koriani Nepali Gaon on Saturday and asked the water resources department officials to take all necessary steps to protect the embankment from erosion.
A water resource department official in Tezpur told TOI that all necessary measures have been taken up in all vulnerable areas near the embankment.
