The Centre in april decided to allow vaccination to everyone above the age of 18 from May 1 under the third phase of the inoculation drive. prime minister narendra modi, in his several press briefings and meetings, has repeatedly emphasised the importance of vaccination to curb the spread of the viral disease and also stressed the need to boost the drive. Two vaccines received approval for emergency use in india at the onset of the program, i.e., i) Covishield and ii) Covaxin. In april 2021, Sputnik V was approved as a third vaccine, which was deployed by May 2021.


As of 21 May 2021, india has administered 193,372,819 doses overall, including first and second doses of the currently-approved vaccines. The total of 19,49,51,603 include 97,52,422 healthcare workers who have taken the first dose and 67,00,147 healthcare workers who have taken the second dose, 1,49,47,941 frontline workers (1st dose), 83,22,058 frontline workers (2nd dose), and 99,79,676 for 18-44 years of age group (1st dose), 6,06,73,244 for over 45 years old to 60 years old (1st dose), 97,84,465 for over 45 years old to 60 years old (2nd dose), 5,65,49,096 for above 60 years (1st dose) and 1,82,42,554 for above 60 years (2nd dose). More than 92 lakh vaccine doses have been administered to the 18-44 years age group as of now.
