Moderna declines Punjab's request for direct vaccine supply, say reports 

As per NDTV, the Punjab government has said that Moderna declined a request for sending vaccines directly to the state, as the company deals only with Centre.

Moderna Inc, one of the leading COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers whose jabs are being administered in North America and Europe, as per its policy, would "only deal with Government of India", said Vikas Garg, Punjab's nodal officer for vaccination, reports MoneyControl.

The Punjab government has recently reached out to all top vaccine makers, including Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, Johnson & Johnson and the producers of Russia's Sputnik V for the direct supply of doses to the state.

"One of a Covid vaccine manufacturer Moderna has refused to send direct vaccination to Punjab government as according to their policy, they only deal with Government of India and not with any state government or private parties," said a statement issued by Punjab's Information and Public Relations Department.

High-level meeting on CBSE class 12 exams, entrance exams underway

 
A high-level meeting with the four Union ministers, state education ministers, and secretaries of education ministries is underway, reports NDTV. The meeting is being held to decide on pending Class 12 board exams and subsequent entrance examinations that were postponed due to the second wave of COVID-19. According to News18, Defence minister Rajnath Singh is chairing the meeting. Union Ministers Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Prakash Javadekar, Smriti Irani are also present in the meeting.
 
CBSE sources had told news agency PTI the possible options that can be explored are — conducting pen and paper mode exams for only major subjects, conducting all exams in two phases planned as per the COVID-19 situation in different states or districts, or cancelling the exams and announcing results as per an alternative assessment scheme.According to reports, a decision on JEE and NEET exams is also likely to be taken.

421 cases of black fungus in Haryana so far; Gurgaon sees max 149 cases

The total number of black fungus cases in Haryana rose to 421 on Sunday, with the maximum 149 cases reported from Gurgaon district, state Health Minister Anil Vij said. He said the state government has made a requisition of 12,000 injections of Amphotericin-B, used in treating black fungus, from the central government.

The health minister said there are 1,250 vials of Amphotericin-B injection available for the treatment of patients presently. He said 421 cases of black fungus have been reported in the state so far and are being given treatment in various hospitals of the state. The highest 149 cases of black fungus are from Gurgaon, a statement quoting him said.

Walk-in vaccination in Mumbai from 24 to 26 May, says BMC

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday said it will implement 'walk-in' vaccination for citizens at its centres from Monday to Wednesday.

A statement issued by it said citizens aged 60 years and above will get the first and the second dose of Covishield vaccine during this period. Health workers and frontline workers, as well as 45 years and above, will get the second dose. All age groups will get the second dose of Covaxin.

From May 27 to 29, the vaccination drive will be carried out after registration by beneficiaries. There will be no vaccination on May 30. Any changes in the schedule will be informed to the public a day earlier, the civic body said.

Telangana logs 2,242 COVID-19 cases, 19 deaths

COVID-19 cases in Telangana continue to show a declining trend with 2,242 fresh infections being reported on Sunday, taking the tally to over 5.53 lakh, while the toll stood at 3,125 with 19 deaths. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 343, followed by Rangareddy (174) and Karimnagar (165), a health department bulletin said. The state has 40,489 active cases. The cases have shown a decline since May 18, when the state logged 3,982 cases.

Rajasthan extends lockdown till 8 June

The Rajasthan government on Sunday extended the coronavirus lockdown by 15 days till June 8. The state may allow some relaxations in commercial activities from June 1 in districts where the COVID-19 situation will improve significantly, according to a government release.

The home department on Sunday issued an order extending the lockdown from 5 am on May 24 to 5 am on June 8.

People going for vaccination will be allowed to move within their respective urban local body or panchayat samiti during the lockdown period.

In a meeting on Saturday, the council of ministers and experts had suggested extending the lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Haryana records 97 more deaths, 4,400 new cases

Haryana on Sunday recorded 97 COVID-19 fatalities, taking the death toll to 7,512, while 4,400 new cases pushed the infection count to 7,38,028.

According to the health department's daily bulletin, the latest deaths include eight each from Bhiwani and Hisar, seven from Karnal and six each from Faridabad, Ambala, Rewari and Jind districts.

Of the new cases, 494 were reported Bhiwani, 308 from Gurgaon, 355 from Jhajjar and 383 from Hisar district, it said. The total active cases stands at 42,816 while 6,87,700 people have recovered from the infection so far, it said. The positivity rate is 8.53 percent, the bulletin said, adding that the recovery rate is 93.18 percent.

Goa curfew extended till 31 May

The Goa government on Sunday extended till May 31 a coronavirus-induced curfew in place in the state since May 9, an official said.

The order, which was issued during the day, stated that all shops will remain shut except those selling essential times and medicines, which can conduct business from 7 am to 1 pm. Restaurant kitchens can operate between 7 am and 7 pm during the curfew period, the order informed.

Tamil Nadu sees drop in new COVID-19 cases, fatalities for 2nd day

Tamil Nadu reported 35,483 new COVID cases and 422 deaths - a decline seen for the second day on Sunday. With this tally, caseload is 18,42,344 and the death toll 20,468 till date.

It was on Friday (May 21) the State reported an all- time high of 36,184 new infections besides adding 467 fatalities on a single day.

According to a medical bulletin today, seven who were among the infected were returnees from various destinations, while a 27-year-old man from Thanjavur succumbed to the virus without any pre-existing illness.

The number discharged were 25,196, taking the overall tally to 15,27,733, leaving 2,94,143 active infections.

Maharashtra sees 26,672 new COVID-19 cases, 594 deaths

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 26,672 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 594 fatalities, taking the tally of infections to 55,79,897 and the toll to 88,620 while 29,177 patients recovered during the day, the health department said.

The tally of recoveries so far in Maharashtra now stands at 51,40,272, it said, adding the state is now left with 3,48,395 active cases.

Mumbai reported 1,427 fresh cases and 49 fatalities, raising the overall count of infections to 6,96,910 and the toll to 14,565.

The Mumbai division, comprising Mumbai and its satellite towns, reported 3,678 new cases and 87 deaths, which increased the overall caseload to 15,08,663 and the number of fatalities to 26,855, the department said.

The Nashik division added 3,037 cases including 1,589 in Ahmednagar district excluding the city. The Pune division reported 6,613 infections including 1,488 cases in Solapur district excluding the city, it said.

Madhya Pradesh records 3,375 fresh COVID-19 cases, 7,587 recoveries

Madhya Pradesh Sunday reported 3,375 new coronavirus cases and 75 fatalities, taking the state's infection tally to 7,64,338 and death toll to 7,558, the health department said. Recoveries outnumbered the new COVID-19 cases in the state, bringing down the count of patients under treatment below the 60,000-mark. The state is now left with 57,766 active cases, it said.

A total of 7,587 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the count of recoveries in Madhya Pradesh to 6,99,014, the department said.

With 829 new infections, Indore's caseload went up to 1,45,301, while that of Bhopal rose by 577 to 1,17,707.

234 more COVID-19 deaths, 4,844  new cases reported in UP

With 234 more coronavirus-related fatalities in Uttar Pradesh, the death toll rose to 19,209, while 4,844 fresh cases pushed the infection tally to 16,69,891. Of the new deaths, Jhansi recorded 21 fatalities, followed by Lucknow 18, Varanasi 15, Ayodhya 14, Agra 11 and 10 each from Gorakhpur, Saharanpur, Lakhimpur-Khiri and Basti.

As far as fresh cases are concerned, state capital Lucknow reported 301 cases, Meerut 297, Saharanpur 264, Varanasi 245 and Gorakhpur 201. In the past 24 hours, 14,086 patients recovered from the disease, taking the total number of patients discharged so far to 15,65,802. The number of active cases in the state stand at 84,880, the statement said.

Mumbai on Sunday reported 1,431 fresh positive cases and 49 deaths on a day when 23,314 tests were conducted, the city civic body said. With the addition of the new cases, Mumbai's caseload went up to 6,97,810 and the death toll to 4,623, it said in a statement.

Odisha's tally mounted to 6,92,382 on Sunday as the state reported its highest single-day spike of 12,852 new cases, despite undergoing lockdown for more than two weeks, a health department official said.

The Haryana government on Sunday extended the lockdown till May 31, according to an order issued. State Chief Secretary Vijai Vardhan in the order said the lockdown, which was earlier imposed till May 24, has been extended by a week till 5 am on May 31.

As per reports, the Punjab government has said that Moderna declined a request for sending vaccines directly to the state, as the company deals only with Centre.

Puducherry's overall tally stood at 96,060 while the number of active cases was 16,851. With 34 fatalities, the toll climbed to 1,359.

The railways has so far delivered 15,284 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen (LMO) in 936 tankers to various states through its Oxygen Express service, the national transporter said on Sunday.

The National Capital recorded 1,649 new cases, the lowest since 30 March, and 189 deaths on Sunday, a health bulletin said. The positivity rate further dipped to 2.42 percent, it said. A total of 68,043 tests were conducted in 2 hours, the bulletin stated.

According to the bulletin, the total number of cases reported in Delhi so far has gone up to 14,16,868 while the toll has reached 23,202.

Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Sunday said that in a meeting with the Centre on CBSE Class 12 board exams, he demanded that the Centre make arrangements for vaccination for all Class 12 students before holding exam.

"Playing with the safety of children by insisting on holding exams will prove to be a big mistake," Sisodia said in a series of tweets. The Centre's priority should be vaccination, Sisodia said and suggested that the government either talk to Pfizer to explore vaccination for 1.4 crore Class 12 students and nearly the same number of teachers across the country or talk to health experts about giving the vaccine for 18+ age group to those Class 12 students aged 17.5 years.

A new study by health officials in England shows for the first time that two doses of vaccines are highly effective against the B1.617.2 variant first identified in India. Public Health England (PHE) said on Saturday that while the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine was 88 percent effective against symptomatic from the B1.617.2 variant of concern (VOC) two weeks after the second dose, the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was 60 percent effective against symptomatic disease from the B1.617.2 VOC.

However, the effectiveness from both types of vaccines was found to be only 33 percent against the VOC found in India after just one dose of either jab.

The Chhattisgarh Board Of Secondary Education (CGBSE) has released the schedule for class 12 board exams, according to which students will be given the question papers and answer sheets from 1 to 5 June for the chosen subjects, reports.  Students will attempt the exam from home and will have to submit the handwritten answer sheet within five days of submitting it. For example, if a student receives the question paper on 5 June, he or she will have to submit the answer sheet by 10 June.

The daily rise in cases in India remained below the 3 lakh-mark for the seventh consecutive day, with 2.4 lakh new cases recorded in a single day, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday. With the fresh cases, India's tally of cases climbed to 2,65,30,132. The toll due to the disease rose to 2,99,266 with 3,741 fresh fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed.

The active cases further reduced to 28,05,399 comprising 10.57 per cent of the total infections, while the national recovery rate improved to 88.30 percent. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease in the country surged to 2,34,25,467 while the case fatality rate stood at 1.13 percent, the data stated.

Tamil Nadu is the latest state to extend lockdown with a large part of the country already under COVID-induced restrictions till month-end, even as the Centre cautioned that there is still a long way to go after some stabilisation in the overall pandemic situation.

The Uttar Pradesh government also extended partial corona curfew till 7 am on May 31, an official statement said on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that the ongoing lockdown, slated to end on 24 May, will continue for another week in the state.

Among the southern states, Kerala, Karnataka and Telangana have already extended their lockdown, while Andhra Pradesh will continue to have a curfew.

In the Northeast, the Mizoram government on Saturday extended total lockdown in Aizawl and other district headquarters by another seven days till 31 May. Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have extended the restrictions till month-end.

The daily rise in cases in India remained below the three lakh mark for the sixth consecutive day, with 2.57 lakh new cases recorded in a single day, the Union health ministry said on Saturday. With the fresh cases, India's tally of cases climbed to 2,62,89,290.

The toll due to the disease rose to 2,95,525 with 4,194 fresh fatalities, the ministry data updated at 8 am showed. The active cases further reduced to 29,23,400 comprising 11.12 percent of the total infections, while the national recovery rate improved to 87.76 percent.

The high positivity rate in many states and the rise in deaths remain a cause of concern.

The 4,194 new fatalities include 1,263 from Maharashtra, 467 from Tamil Nadu, 353 from Karnataka, 252 from Delhi, 172 each from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, 159 from West Bengal, 142 from Kerala, 129 from Rajasthan, 116 from Uttarakhand, 112 from Haryana, 104 from Andhra Pradesh and 96 from Chhattisgarh.

Addressing a press conference, NITI Aayog member (Health) VK Paul said India was able to come this far in controlling this pandemic through restrictions on social and economic activities and containment and care measures.

"In large parts of the country, the pandemic is stabilising, the positivity rate and active cases are reducing and recovery rate is rising," he said,

It is also being seen that an increase is being seen in other states so this is a mixed picture but overall there has been a decrease in case burden" he said.

He noted that in 382 districts, the positivity rate is over 10 percent, adding there is still a long way to go to battle this particular wave" and "we also have to ensure that there should be no laxity".
