Agartala, May 22 (UNI) The daylong general strike in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District
Council (ADC) area today by ruling BJP’s partner in Tripura government, IPFT protesting the
attack on it’s chief and Revenue Minister N C Debbarma and party MLA Dhirendra Debbarma
in separate incidents passed off peacefully so far.
The IPFT general secretary and Tribal Welfare Minister Mevar Kr Jamatia said except for
Ampi in Gomati district, the strike was total and incident free. A group of supporters of royal
scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman’s party TIPRA Motha had been forced to open the shops
in local markets but the traders did not respond.
TIPRA Motha activists have allegedly abused IPFT workers and have been instigating in
several locations of Ampi since this morning but the later party supporters didn’t react. The
common people responded loudly against the terror tactics of TIPRA Motha across ADC
areas, which sent a clear message to them.
“Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has launched the party with an aim to strengthen brotherhood
and integration among different communities and the people responded well to his call. As a
result, TIPRA won ADC. But soon after the declaration of result in last month, TIPRA activists
have resorted to violence across the state targeting ruling IPFT and BJP and still it is going on.
Senior most politician of the state N C Debbarma was attacked in his own constituency by
unruly TIPRA people – then how can people rely on Pradyot?” Jamatia questioned.
He alleged that a few hundreds of BJP and IPFT local leaders were attacked and more than
a thousand of houses were set ablaze after declaration of the election result and still the
atrocities are continuing. So far, nobody is arrested in connection with the attack on N C
Debbarma though two accused of perpetrating the attack on MLA Dhirendra Debbarma have
been in police custody.
Meanwhile, a large number of TIPRA supporters last evening assembled in Radhapur police
station of Jirania, south-eastern outskirts of Agartala seeking unconditional release of the
accused persons. However, police have managed to evacuate them and shifted the accused
persons to Agartala for interrogation.
“Security has been beefed up across ADC especially in Jirania and Jampuijala sub-divisions
to avert any attempt to breach the peace,” said a senior police officer here.
