It was heartbreaking to see about 2,240 trees of Ahmedabad being extirpated in a matter of two days when Tauktae swept through the city. But the hope that some trees can survive is still alive in a few Green Samaritans of Ahmedabad. They worked through the night to salvage about 500 uprooted trees. The initiative was undertaken from Tuesday night till Friday.
Zubin Ashara, a wildlife photographer who led the initiative with 150 volunteers, said: “A number of trees fell in Ahmedabad due to the cyclone.” Ashara added: “But the roots of some tall trees were still partly in the soil. I along with a group of volunteers took up the task to replant these trees.”
The 500 trees are 10 feet tall or even taller. “Such a fullgrown tree can provide oxygen to 15 people and in times like these, the importance of oxygen is well realized,” said Ashara.

Jaydeep Parekh, one of the volunteers, said: “We have consulted environment experts for this exercise. Trees whose 30% of the roots were still attached to the ground can be replanted.” Parekh added: “We have put up support structures such as bamboo and have added soil. We’re inspecting these trees to ensure they’re growing fine.”
