UP: Teenager dies after police thrashes him for flouting Covid protocol

Unnao, May 22(UNI) Two policemen were suspended and a Homeguard jawan was sacked following death of a teenager due to alleged beating for violating the Covid norms.

The 17-year-old boy died on Friday after he was allegedly beaten up by the police here for “violating” the ongoing corona curfew’ in the state, his family claimed.

The incident took place in Bhatpuri locality in Bangarmau area when the boy was selling vegetable outside his house. An FIR was registered against the policemen and one homeguard.

During the partial lockdown in Unnao’s Bangarmau area, Vijay Chowdhury, a policeman from Bangarmau Kotwali, went out to patrol along with his fellow constable Seemawat and home guard Satyaprakash, after they received information about shops being opened amid curfew.

It is being said that at about 1600 hrs, Faisal was held by the policemen and it is alleged that the cops took the vegetable seller on their motorcycle to the police station, where Faisal was beaten mercilessly.

When his condition deteriorated, the police personnel hurriedly took him to the CHC Bangarmau where the doctor declared him dead on arrival. The policemen fled from the scene.

Meanwhile, the information of the death reached to the relatives after which a crowd gathered on the spot.



The family alleged that the boy was caught by constables for allegedly violating ‘corona curfew’ and thrashed with a stick. He was later taken to a police station, where he was again thrashed following which his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to the Community Health Centre, where he was declared dead, the family alleged.



The family then protested with the body on the road for about five hours after the SP assured them of investigation into the matter.

On the instructions of the SP, two accused cops were suspended, while the home guard has been dismissed.

Even after this, the family remained adamant on the murder case and demanded for ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh. The family of the deceased calmed down only after a case of murder was registered against the policemen. After this, the police sent the body for post-mortem.

"Constable Vijay Chodhury and Seemawat have been suspended with immediate effect in the matter and services of homeguard Satyaprakash have been terminated. The entire matter will be probed and an FIR will be registered against the policemen,” the police statement here said.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president and former CM Akhilesh Yadav spoke to the victim’s family on the phone and assured them of all possible help.
